Claude Google Sheets integration over MCP

Claude Google Sheets integration over MCP lets an agent read spreadsheet ranges and propose or apply cell changes. AIPx generates tools from the official Sheets REST API, connects your Google account through OAuth and gives each agent its own tool rules.

What your agent can do with Google Sheets

The API reads spreadsheet metadata and cell ranges, creates spreadsheets, writes or appends values, clears ranges and applies structural or formatting batches. Tool labels here are source operation identifiers. Supply a known spreadsheet ID or URL: the Sheets API connection does not search your entire Drive for filenames.

Tool What it does Access Mode
sheets.spreadsheets.get Spreadsheet metadata read Allow
sheets.spreadsheets.values.get One range read Allow
sheets.spreadsheets.values.batchGet Several ranges read Allow
sheets.spreadsheets.create Create spreadsheet write Confirm
sheets.spreadsheets.values.update Write values write Confirm
sheets.spreadsheets.values.append Append rows write Confirm
sheets.spreadsheets.values.clear Clear range write Confirm
sheets.spreadsheets.batchUpdate Structural/formatting requests write Confirm

Source labels describe the checked connection. Live discovery and provider access determine availability; account-specific agent names may be normalized. Modes in this table are recommendations, not a change to upstream permissions.

Can Claude edit Google Sheets?

Yes. The connector includes value update, append, clear and spreadsheet batch-update operations. Keep those tools on Confirm and ask Claude to show the target spreadsheet, tab, range and proposed values before a write. Reading Budget!A1:F40 does not need authority to clear the same range.

For an analysis task, give the agent the spreadsheet URL and explicit columns. Ask it to distinguish formulas from entered values and to identify blank rows. A model can calculate an appealing answer from the wrong tab; checking metadata and reading a small range first catches that mistake before a larger analysis.

The OAuth connection uses spreadsheet access, but AIPx modes do not change the provider’s granted scopes. A personal spreadsheet and a work spreadsheet can require different Google accounts. Specify which connection to use rather than letting a filename guess determine the account.

Google Sheets MCP server: open source vs AIPx

OptionSetupGood fit
Google’s official Sheets MCPGoogle’s hosted MCP and its setup requirementsDirect vendor integration for one client
Community mcp-google-sheetsYour chosen runtime and Google credentialsLocal control and implementation-specific tools
AIPx Sheets adapterOAuth plus API-generated toolsShared spreadsheet connections with agent-specific rules

Google now documents an official remote Sheets MCP server. AIPx uses the Sheets REST API instead, so these are different implementations. The mcp-google-sheets repository is a community alternative.

A direct Google route can be simpler for one spreadsheet client. AIPx adds a gateway handling data, with reusable connections and tool controls in return. Neither route removes Google API quotas or makes cell contents trustworthy instructions.

Connect Claude to Google Sheets

Connect Google Sheets with Google OAuth, then supply the spreadsheet URL or ID in your task. A Drive filename alone is insufficient for this connector.

  1. Open the AIPx dashboard, choose Google Sheets under Integrations and complete its connection form or authorization.
  2. Create an MCP agent, enable that connection and choose the tools this particular agent needs. Save the rules before opening your AI client.
  3. Copy the agent’s complete URL. The examples below use AGENT_ID; replace it with the actual value from your dashboard.

An endpoint identifies the AIPx agent, not a provider API key. Client authentication to AIPx is separate from connecting Google Sheets; adding the URL does not grant extra provider permissions. Our MCP gateway guide explains how several approved connections can share that endpoint.

Connect Claude to Google Sheets

In Claude, open Customize → Connectors and add a custom connector with your AIPx URL. Continue through AIPx sign-in, then check the tools available in a conversation. Custom connector access depends on account and workspace policy; administrators can restrict it. The Claude MCP setup guide covers the current controls. A direct vendor connection can be simpler when Google Sheets is the only service you need.

Google Sheets MCP in Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http aipx https://dash.aipx.run/mcp/AGENT_ID

After /mcp authorization, give Claude Code a spreadsheet ID and ask for tab metadata first. Read a small A1 range before proposing writes. Claude Code MCP setup covers HTTP configuration and authorization.

Google Sheets MCP in Cursor

Add this server to .cursor/mcp.json for the project or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for your user:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "aipx": { "url": "https://dash.aipx.run/mcp/AGENT_ID" }
  }
}

Sign in from Cursor, then inspect the spreadsheet tabs and read the explicit range in your task. Keep clear and batch updates hidden during analysis. The Cursor guide covers configuration and approvals.

Google Sheets MCP in Codex

codex mcp add aipx --url https://dash.aipx.run/mcp/AGENT_ID
codex mcp login aipx
codex mcp list

Codex uses the HTTP endpoint and browser OAuth; it does not need a copy of the Google Sheets credential in its config. See Codex MCP setup for TOML configuration and project trust requirements.

Custom ChatGPT MCP access can use the same Sheets endpoint, subject to account and workspace support. Supply a spreadsheet URL; this connector cannot search Drive by filename. ChatGPT MCP setup explains access restrictions.

Use a work and a personal Google account

Connect each Google account separately. A finance analyst can read the work spreadsheet while the personal account stays hidden; a budgeting agent can use the reverse arrangement. Assign rules to the connection rather than assuming a tab name separates work data from personal data.

Hide spreadsheet creation, value clearing and batch updates for a read-only analysis job. General defaults are Allow for reads and Confirm for writes, but this narrower recommendation reduces accidental changes. MCP permissions explains why Hide is stricter than a client approval hint.

Google Sheets in Claude Code

The Claude Code command below installs the AIPx agent endpoint. Include a spreadsheet ID in the initial prompt and ask for metadata before requesting row edits. You can use Gmail for the source receipt and Google Calendar for meeting dates without giving either service unnecessary writes.

Connect Google Sheets to ChatGPT

The same endpoint can be added through ChatGPT’s supported developer/custom MCP connector flow when your plan and workspace permit it. AIPx Free and ChatGPT connector eligibility are separate. For research sources outside the spreadsheet, consider Exa; location context can come from Google Maps.

Spreadsheet ranges, quotas and destructive operations

Ranges are the useful unit of restraint. Ask for a named tab and a bounded A1 range, then expand deliberately if the answer requires more data. Metadata can identify valid tabs without reading every value. Never interpret “clean up the sheet” as permission to clear a whole spreadsheet.

batchUpdate may contain several structural or formatting requests. Confirm applies to that tool call; AIPx does not create a separate approval boundary for each nested request. Review the full batch. Google still enforces API quotas and spreadsheet access rights. If discovery works but a read fails, check the selected account, spreadsheet sharing and range syntax.

The Google Sheets connection can use AIPx Free with 3 active accounts and 1 agent; check AIPx pricing for gateway plans and keep provider or client charges separate.

What to ask your agent

Name the Google Sheets account and a bounded task. Ask for source identifiers and a proposed result before approving a change.

> Read Revenue!A1:F30 in this spreadsheet and explain which rows lack a renewal date; do not edit.
> Compare January and February totals using these two explicit ranges and show the calculation.
> Prepare five new rows for Leads!A2:D6, then show the exact values before writing.
> Inspect spreadsheet metadata and list tab names without reading unrelated ranges.
> Append this approved expense as one new row; ask before calling the append operation.
> Compare the meeting dates in this sheet with Google Calendar, keeping both sources unchanged.

FAQ

Can I connect Google Sheets to Claude?

Yes. Connect Google Sheets in AIPx, create an MCP agent and add its copied URL as a Claude custom connector when your account and workspace permit. Choose tools before using the connection.

How do I add Google Sheets MCP to Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add --transport http aipx https://dash.aipx.run/mcp/AGENT_ID with your actual agent endpoint, then use /mcp to authorize and inspect tools. See Claude Code MCP setup.

Is the Google Sheets integration free?

AIPx Free includes 3 active connected accounts and 1 agent; Pro is $3/month. Provider subscriptions, API charges and the AI client's own connector access are separate. See AIPx pricing.

Can I connect two Google Sheets accounts?

Yes. Add separately authorized Google Sheets connections and choose each account's tools independently for the agent. One endpoint can include both; it does not merge accounts or synchronize provider data.

Can my agent change Google Sheets data?

Yes. The Sheets API tools include writes, append, clear and formatting or structural batches. Keep writes on Confirm and hide clear or broad batch updates when the agent only needs analysis.

When should I use the official Google Sheets connection?

Use a direct vendor connection when one service and one client meet your needs and you prefer fewer services handling data. For an API-only service, that can mean using the official API or a compatible server you maintain. AIPx adds shared connections and agent-specific rules.
